GRANBURY STUDENT TO MAKE EXTRAORDINARY TRIP

November 3, 2009
Granbury student Dylan Smith is like most second graders in the community – happy, smart, and quick with a funny comment. Dylan, though, faces a tough challenge with a rare skin disease. His perseverance led a teacher to nominate him for an extraordinary trip.
Dylan and his mother, Paula, will be traveling November 5-9, 2009, to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida. The trip is sponsored by Kidd’s Kids, a charitable organization founded in 1991 by nationally-syndicated morning radio host Kidd Kraddick to make a difference in the lives of children with special medical needs.
The nomination was made in July 2009 by Allison White, who taught Dylan in first grade while he was attending Nettie Baccus Elementary School during the 2008-09 school year. Dylan is now enrolled at Emma Roberson Elementary School.
White wrote to the organization about Dylan being afflicted with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB) and his positive attitude in dealing with a disease that would discourage others. According to the National Institutes of Health, EB is an illness that causes the skin to be fragile and easily injured leading to painful blisters. These blisters can cause serious problems if they become infected.
In her nomination letter, White wrote, “What was so special about Dylan is that although you see this child completely bandaged from head to toe, you could look in his eyes and see the enthusiasm of a normal six-year old boy, no different than anyone else . . . Nothing was going to hold him back.”
“Dylan is one of the strongest people I have ever met in my life. He has taught me that no matter how big the struggle, to enjoy life and to accept it for what it is,” she continued. “Dylan taught me to be better at everything I do.”
White also wrote about Dylan’s mother and nurses. “Dylan’s mom works non-stop to provide him with the best life he could ask for. Everything she does revolves around Dylan and what she can do to make his day . . . I was truly blessed to be able to work with [his nurses] on a daily basis throughout the school year. It is hard to come by people with the hearts that these nurses have. The love they have for Dylan is immeasurable,” she commented.
